農業従事者の高年齢化は年々進んでいる。

日本の農業の担い手 
2001年には、1980年の約半数にあたる1000万人強の人々が300万戸の農家に住んでいました。男女別では男性よりもわずかに多くの女性が農村に住んでいます。日本の販売農家の数は、1985年に比べて3分の1減少しています。2ヘクタール(5エーカー)以上の土地を所有する農家の数は安定していますが、最小規模の農家で最も深刻な減少が見られます。1世帯の家族数もまた大きく減少しました。1980年には1世帯に4.6人が住んでいたのに対し、2001年には3.3人に減っています。専業で農業を営んでいるのは、農家の人々の5分の1にすぎません。農業をしない人々の中には子供や高齢者も含まれますが、その他の成人は農業以外の仕事をする場合もあれば、農業に加えてその他の仕事に従事するケースもあります。
