Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
Sexual harassment is still a common problem for many working women in America. There are two types of sexual harassment in the workplace: “quid pro quo” and “hostile environment.” “Quid pro quo” (“this for that”) is a type of harassment in which a person with authority demands sexual favors from a person with less authority in exchange for a promise of promotion or hiring. “Hostile environment harassment.” is the physical, verbal or visual sexual harassment so severe that the workplace becomes unbearable for the victim. Touching and groping, as well as comments about a woman’s body, sexual remarks, and visually displayed pornographic pictures can all be considered as creating a hostile work environment for women. Many working women who became the victims of sexual harassment hesitate to complain because of the hierarchical structure of the work place. However, under a 1991 amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, victims of sexual harassment can recover compensatory damages. Such damage payments can include payments for emotional pain and suffering, inconvenience, mental anguish, and future monetary losses that result from sexual harassment.
